A pre-shipment inspection should answer one decision: does the defined production lot meet the buyer’s written requirements well enough to release? It is not a factory tour, and it cannot repair an incomplete purchase specification.
For stainless steel sinks, the inspection plan should connect the purchase order, approved drawing, reference sample, component list, packaging specification and defect classification. Buyers should agree the plan before production is complete.
Confirm the lot and inspection timing
Identify the PO, model/SKU, lot quantity and production status. Inspection too early can miss packing errors or later rework. Record how cartons are selected and keep the selection independent of the production team’s preferred samples.
Use risk-based defect classes
Define critical, major and minor defects for the actual product and market. A sharp edge, wrong model, missing safety-related part or unusable mounting feature may carry more risk than a small appearance variation on a concealed surface. The classification belongs in the agreed inspection document; it should not be invented after results are known.

Do not use appearance to prove material grade
Visual inspection cannot establish stainless-steel grade. If grade identity is a purchase requirement, define traceability and documentary or analytical verification separately. ASTM A240/A240M covers chemical and mechanical requirements for specified stainless plate, sheet and strip; citing it does not prove a finished sink or supplier complies.
Make measurements reproducible
State the measuring point, instrument, unit and tolerance. Clarify whether thickness means nominal incoming sheet, a finished-product reading at a defined location, or another contractual value. Record actual results rather than only “pass.” For drainage observations, place the sink as specified and define the water volume, duration and acceptance rule.
Use sampling correctly
ISO 2859-1:2026 provides AQL-indexed sampling plans for inspection by attributes, including switching rules. The responsible parties still need to choose the inspection level, AQL values and defect classes. Sampling balances inspection effort and risk; it does not guarantee a defect-free lot.
Issue a traceable release decision
The report should identify inspected cartons and units, list every nonconformity with photos and measured values, state the sampling plan, and record the conclusion. If rework is accepted, define the scope and verification. Do not convert “pending rework” into “passed” without evidence that the affected lot was corrected and reinspected.

Can a buyer inspect only one sink?
One unit can support sample approval, but it normally cannot represent lot consistency. Choose sampling based on risk and the agreed plan.
Does AQL mean the buyer accepts that percentage of defects?
No. AQL indexes a sampling scheme and its acceptance rules; it is not a simple warranty that the shipment contains a stated defect percentage.
Should cartons be opened during inspection?
Yes, selected cartons need unpacking when the plan covers product condition, components and internal packaging. Define repacking responsibilities.
What if the drawing and golden sample disagree?
Stop and resolve the governing requirement in writing. Inspectors should not guess which reference has priority.
